As such, the former president was ordered to pay $5 million for defamation and battery in the civil lawsuit. The lawsuit stems from an alleged 1996 incident in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room where Carroll accused Trump of raping her, denying it happened and making up the story to sell books. The jury did not find Trump liable in the rape claim. Because the lawsuit was in civil court, Trump did not face any criminal charges in the case. Following the verdict, Trump's lawyers filed a notice of appeal in the case.
