The clergyperson, Heather Elizabeth Cook, initially fled the scene of the accident, but returned later to accept responsibility. In 2010, she pleaded guilty to another drunk driving charge in an incident that didn’t involve any injuries.
Episcopal clerics and lay delegates were not informed of the 2010 charge when they elected her to the position of bishop in May, but the church is now investigating the more recent incident, and that investigation might result in Cook losing her post.
