St. Louis Suburb Residents Sue Over Ticketing, Jailing Practices

Residents of two St. Louis suburbs are suing those cities for allegedly ticketing impoverished minorities at a greater rate than whites and then locking them up in overcrowded and unsanitary jails for failing to pay the fines or show up in court. So reports The New York Times.

Filed on behalf of the plaintiffs by several nonprofit groups, the lawsuits seek compensation for the people whose rights were violated and an end to the allegedly unconstitutional and unlawful ticketing and jailing practices in the two defendant cities, Ferguson and Jennings, Mo.
