Law Firm Refuses to Pay Fee to Estate of Partner Who Committed Suicide

The family of a Minnesota lawyer who took his own life has filed suit against the law firm where he was a partner for the amount the lawyer was owed for negotiating the settlement of a claim against a drunk driver. So reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Though the lawyer had collected the check for the settlement amount before he committed suicide, the law firm where he worked is refusing to share its proceeds with the lawyer’s estate, arguing that his suicide could be construed as a withdrawal from the contingency fee agreement that the firm had with the plaintiffs in the drunk driver case.
