Ohio Voter Roll Purge Facing Challenge

Larry Harmon of Ohio is challenging a state law purging him from voter rolls based on his failure to vote in two consecutive elections and allegedly ignoring notification his registration would be cancelled. So reports NBC News.

The law triggered concerns that minorities would be unfairly targeted for registration removal. A federal appeals court ruled Ohio violated the National Voter Registration Act, which limits roll purging to residents who have moved, become mentally incapacitated, are convicted of a felony or die.

Failure to vote should not trigger a roll purge, the court said. The state contends it is the failure to respond to the notice, not the failure to vote, that leads to removal.

Harmon said he does not recall receiving any notice. The case will likely impact laws in Georgia, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, which have similar registration rules.
