Senate Expands Violence Against Women Act

The Senate recently voted to expand the reach of the landmark Violence Against Women Act of 1994 to specify that: (1) victim’s rights and prosecution programs created by the law can be used in cases of domestic abuse involving same-sex couples; and (2) tribal courts may pursue non-Indians who attack Indian woman on tribal land, according to a recent New York Times article.

In one of the top 25 securities class-action settlements of all time, pharmaceutical giant Merck agreed to pay $688 million to settle two lawsuits alleging the company didn’t act in the best interests of its shareholders, according to a recent article from USA Today.
