Trader Joe’s Sues Pirate Joe’s, Unauthorized Reseller of Its Products

The specialty food retailer Trader Joe's is suing a man who resells the company's products at higher prices at his own store, Pirate Joe's, in Vancouver, British Columbia. So CNN reports.

 

Consumers in that market don't otherwise have access to those products since there are no Trader Joe's stores in Canada. The story made headlines after the owner of Pirate Joe's filed a motion to dismiss earlier this month. The reseller, who claims he has spent more than $350,000 in Trader Joe's over the last couple of years, is having an increasingly hard time replenishing his stock, as some Trader Joe's stores in the Pacific Northwest have asked him to leave when they spot him on buying expeditions.

 

Recognizing that selling consumers spoiled food could tarnish the reputation of Trader Joe's, the owner of Pirate Joe's no longer sells perishables. But that hasn't been enough to appease the American retailer, which is alleging the reseller is violating trademark infringement, false advertising, and a host of other laws.
