Judge Releases Mentally Ill Man Who Threw Boiling Oil on Niece

A New York City criminal court judge charged—and then released—a schizophrenic man who caused his 13-year-old niece to suffer several second-degree burns by splashing her with boiling cooking oil. So reports The New York Daily News.

The judge refused the prosecutor’s request for $500,000 bail, instead issuing an order of protection prohibiting the defendant, 28-year-old Jonathan Salinas, from going near the niece. Salinas, who was charged with assault, possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the boiling oil incident, has been charged with violent criminal activity in the past.
