Texas Court to Hospital: Let Brain Dead, Pregnant Patient Die

A judge in Texas last week granted a family’s motion to order a hospital in the Lone Star State to take a brain-dead, pregnant woman off life support. So reports CBS News.

The hospital had been refusing to take the woman off life support against her family’s wishes because, its administrators argued, doing so would violate a Texas Health Code provision that prevents the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from pregnant patients. The law’s applicability was complicated in this case because: (1) the patient was arguably already dead, and (2) the fetus she was carrying was no longer viable.
