Mich AG. Settles Over Same-sex Adoption Dispute

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel settled a case challenging the practice of prohibiting taxpayer-funded adoption agencies from refusing to place foster kids with same-sex couples. So reports the Detroit News.

The settlement requires the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to “maintain non-discriminatory provisions” for foster and adoption agencies, and calls for the state to end contracts with providers that discriminate against gay couples in state-contracted instances. Nessel is Michigan’s first openly gay AG and said during her campaign she was not planning to defend the state’s law giving faith-based adoption groups the ability to deny same-sex couples.
