Jury Slams UnitedHealth for Not Monitoring Hepatitis Doctor

StethoscopeJurors in Las Vegas ordered two UnitedHealth Group units to pay $524 million in compensatory and punitive damages for failing to oversee a doctor who was a member of the insurer’s HMO network, Bloomberg reports.

The doctor—who faces second-degree murder charges—is blamed for causing two women to contract hepatitis by performing colonoscopies on them using shoddy medical practices and unsterile equipment.

The verdict is the largest amount awarded by a jury so far in 2013.
