Heart Procedures Prompt Hundreds to Sue

More than 300 people are suing St. Joseph Hospital in Kentucky, its parent company, and 11 of its current or former cardiologists, according to an article in USA Today.

The plaintiffs claims the doctors conspired to perform unnecessary, risky and often painful heart procedures to unjustly enrich themselves,

Edward Marshall, the plaintiff who initiated the lawsuit, first took action in Sept. 2011 after a cardiologist he saw for a second opinion told him that an artery propped open with a stent by one of the defendant doctors was barely blocked.

Marshall’s lawyers then placed newspaper ads seeking other potential plaintiffs. Since then, about 40 additional suits have been filed, including one that names 280 plaintiffs. No trial dates have been set.
