Trial by Jury Declining: Judges, Legal Community Concerned

Judges, prosecutors and even court stenographers have expressed disappointment that jury trials are becoming increasingly rare. So reports The New York Times.

Harsher mandatory minimum sentences is among the reasons cited for the decline because they deter the accused from risking a loss at trial. As a result, evidence is scrutinized less, fewer Americans are civically engaged through participation in jury duty and court clerks are deprived of valuable experiences gained from trials.
