New Winston & Strawn Department to Take on NCAA

The New-York based law firm Winston & Strawn is establishing a practice specifically dedicated to representing college athletes against the college-athletics-governing body known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (the "NCAA"). So reports Bloomberg.

The NCAA has become the subject of lawsuits alleging its rules are unfair to players. The department at Winston & Strawn will be headed by Jeff Kessler, a partner at the firm who has represented the interests of athletes including Michael Jordan and who worked for the NFL in the case that produced the current system of free agency for professional football players. Many of the lawsuits against the NCAA center around the fact that organization prohibits college athletes from receiving payment of any kind while making money itself from its sale of the players' images and likenesses.
