Dems Plan 9/11-style Commission as Talk of Capitol Riot Probe Heats Up

There is a brewing Beltway brawl over how to handle the events of the Wednesday, Jan. 6, storming of the U.S. Capitol complex in Washington, D.C, and a flurry of speculation about what’s motivating Republican and Democratic leadership has resulted in accusations and finger pointing.

A bill sponsored by Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, aims to create a “bipartisan 9/11-style commission” to investigate the fatal events that took place that day. However, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy have each voiced opposition to the idea. Previously, McConnell expressed concerns he does not have faith the work of the commission would, in fact, be bipartisan.

Former President Donald Trump, who stands to be featured prominently in any probe of the day’s events, issued a statement recently calling the commission a “Democrat trap,” and urging Republicans to resist its creation.

“Republicans in the House and Senate should not approve the Democrat trap of the January 6 Commission. It is just more partisan unfairness and unless the murders, riots, and fire bombings in Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, Chicago, and New York are also going to be studied, this discussion should be ended immediately,” Trump wrote in his statement. “Republicans must get much tougher and much smarter, and stop being used by the Radical Left. Hopefully, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy are listening!”

Trump's statement, however, did not make clear why he was attempting to link the protests and violence in the wake of the murder of George Floyd to the violent attack on the Capitol and democratic process by his supporters who were attempting to stop the peaceful transition of power and overturn the results of the election Trump lost and Joe Biden won.

"BTW, GOP opposition to a 1/6 commission is a good reason to pursue criminal penalties against Trump for instigating a riot, seeking to perpetrate voter fraud in GA. McConnell said there should be other forum for deciding his liability. Why not a jury of 12 men and women?"

The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, which was also known as the 9-11 Commission was created in 2002 to generate a report on the full scope of the events surrounding the attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, “including preparedness for and the immediate response to the attacks,” according to the commission’s website.

Per the proposed legislation creating the 1/6 commission, it will be tasked with investigating the “facts and causes” of the “domestic terrorist attack” on the Capitol Complex and subsequent response should it be passed. As an agreement upon the language of the bill was announced, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it is imperative the “truth” surrounding the events of the day, which constitute some of the worst in American history, is uncovered.

“On January 6, one of the darkest days in our history, our temple of democracy was attacked by insurrectionists. The gleeful desecration of our Capitol resulted in multiple deaths, physical harm to over 140 members of law enforcement and terror and trauma among staff, support workers and Members,” Pelosi said. “It is imperative that we seek the truth of what happened on January 6 with an independent, bipartisan 9/11-type Commission to examine and report upon the facts, causes and security relating to the terrorist mob attack.”

"Join my colleagues & me live at the US Capitol as we speak about 2 pieces of legislation that will establish an independent, bipartisan 9/11-type commission to investigate the Jan 6th attack on the Capitol & provide emergency security supplemental funding."
