Chang was both the first Chinese graduate of Columbia Law School and the first Chinese American admitted as a lawyer in the U.S. Chang overcame “rampant” discrimination against the Chinese and carved out a legal career during a time of “labor unrest and fears about the loss of white racial purity in the country.”
